As a 57-year-old photography enthusiast from Oshawa, I've always been fascinated by the way a single shot can freeze time and evoke emotions. Photography has been my passion, allowing me to capture life's beauty and preserve memories. Recently, I've discovered a new creative outlet that has taken my love for visual storytelling to the next level: painting and drawing.
It all started with experimenting with editing software to enhance my photos. I found myself drawn to the artistic aspects of manipulation and enhancement, which sparked curiosity about traditional art forms. I picked up a sketchbook and pencils, and before I knew it, I was hooked.
The similarities between photography and painting/drawing soon became apparent. Both require attention to detail, composition, and a deep understanding of light and shadow. My experience with photography has actually helped me improve my drawing skills, as I've developed a keen eye for textures, patterns, and colors.
One of the most significant benefits of exploring painting and drawing has been the therapeutic aspect. Just like photography, it allows me to disconnect from the world and focus on the present moment. I've found solace in the process of creating something from scratch, and the sense of accomplishment when I complete a piece is incredible.
My photography background has also influenced my art style. I'm drawn to abstract art, and my paintings often feature sweeping brushstrokes and dramatic colours. The way light interacts with the environment is something I've always tried to capture in my photos, and now I'm experimenting with replicating that effect with paints and pencils.
If you're a fellow photographer looking to explore new creative horizons or an art enthusiast wanting to try something new, I encourage you to pick up a brush or pencil and see where it takes you. You never know what hidden talents you might discover.
For now, I'm excited to continue exploring this new passion and see where it takes me. Who knows? Maybe one day, I'll have an art show in Oshawa, and you'll be able to see my masterpieces in person!
